Housing:
The University of Utah runs a 134 room hotel known as the
Guest House.
The hotel is affordable and convenient and serviced by a free campus
shuttle. However, there are many summer conferences, so rooms are
limited. Reserve ASAP. ISFI cannot reserve a block of rooms, so
you are on your own. Check the website for details.
ISFI has reserved a block of rooms with Chase
Suite Hotel, on the TRAX [light rail] line to the university,
and offering free shuttle service too. 4 person suites will be $99
plus tax, 6 person suites $129, but to get these prices, you must
call the hotel directly at 888-433-6071 and ask for reservations
under the group name of Intermountain Suzuki Flute.
Also on the TRAX line, closer to downtown, is Little
America Hotel, which was praised by last year’s institute
guests. The most affordable rooms run in the $100 range. University
Park Marriott has some rooms in the $100 range, and nice views
of the valley and nearby foothills. It is also on the TRAX line
& very close to campus.
Public Transportation:
You can get around Salt Lake City easily and affordably
by utilizing the TRAX light rail and/or UTA (Utah Transit Authority)
buses. For a complete listing of bus and TRAX routes and times,
please visit the UTA
Website. You can also call 801-RIDE-UTA (743-3882) for assistance.
Taxi cabs are available after bus hours. Yellow Cab can be reached
at (801) 521-2100. A complete listing of taxis servicing the Salt
Lake area can be found here.
Meals:
Meals are mostly on your own. There are a number of eateries
within a block of Gardner Hall. A favorite lunch is picnic on the
shaded lawn outside. We will have one evening where we will have
dinner together, details to follow.
Recreation:
The University of Utah is part of a larger community known
as the Foothill
Cultural District. Activities and places of interest as well
as coupons and half price tickets are obtainable online. Two U of
U museums are also featured on the site. As last year, ISFI participants
will have access to the Museum of Natural History for $1.25 per
day, chaperons are FREE. Within 5 minutes on foot from Gardner Hall.
Free tours are offered to the Museum of Fine Arts. Not to be missed
are the beautiful gardens at Red Butte.
For swimming and ice skating, institute participants have access
to the nearby public recreation facility, Salt
Lake City Sports Complex.
